The Client

The St. Louis Public Library provides a gateway to knowledge, guidance, ideas and resources, to inspire individuals, families and communities on a journey of lifelong learning. The Library has 16 locations in the city and must effectively communicate and promote events throughout the library system.

Primary Goals

  • Transition the library’s Check It Out (CIO) newsletter from a print edition going to nearly 120,000 patrons and supporters to an email newsletter, while remaining a valuable tool to inform them of resources, events and activities.
  • Conduct surveys and use them to collect information about newsletter recipients so the library can direct targeted emails to groups who have specific interest in given subjects, ensuring that the right information is getting to the right people.
  • Host the newsletter on the Library’s Web site so that it is easily accessible for people who do not have ready access to an email account.

The Solution

The St. Louis Public Library uses MarketVolt’s software to create its own CIO email newsletters, send them to recipients and track the results. The emails provide the Library’s recipients with valuable information on subjects ranging from concerts in library locations to readings, new books and DVDs in the library’s collections. MarketVolt helped the Library develop its email content creation and production plan to ensure a smooth transition from the print version to email. MarketVolt helped the library put a signup form on the front of its web site. The Library also used MarketVolt’s survey tool to gather information on newsletter recipients so that it can direct emails to recipients based on their interests. In addition, MarketVolt’s web design team developed Web pages to host the newsletter for easy online access.

The Results

Using MarketVolt eliminated a very large printing and postage budget needed to support the Library’s old newsletter. The Library is also using the platform to send targeted emails to promote its events and special services. The Library experienced a 50% increase in attendance at its monthly Not So Quiet (NSQ) concerts after it started sending the monthly email newsletter announcing the NSQ events.
